The stretch of coast west of Lisbon — Estoril, Cascais, Carcavelos, Parede — is where a large share of British households moving to Portugal actually end up, and it is a genuinely different delivery proposition from the capital behind it.
This is condominium country. Gated developments with a porteiro controlling vehicle access, apartment blocks with a single small lift and a booked move-in window, and villas on roads that were laid out for one car, not an articulated lorry.
The move itself is straightforward road freight. The delivery needs organising.
Road freight, then the condominium
Goods travel by road from the UK, across the Channel and down through France and Spain into Portugal — the same overland route described on our route page. For this coast the final approach is usually off the A5 rather than through central Lisbon, which avoids the worst of the city.
What needs arranging is the building. Most condominiums require the move to be notified in advance, many restrict the hours, and a good number will want to see proof of insurance before a crew is allowed in. We deal with the administração directly so that is settled before the vehicle arrives.
The Marginal — the coast road through Estoril and Cascais — is slow, narrow in places and heavily parked. Large vehicles are frequently better off staging elsewhere and shuttling in, and we will say so at the survey rather than discovering it on the day.

What delivery here is actually like
- Gated developments
- Vehicle access controlled at a gate, often with size limits on what can come in. Booked ahead through the building.
- Small lifts
- Portuguese apartment lifts are frequently too small for a mattress or a wardrobe. External hoists are common and sometimes the only option above the second floor.
- Coastal exposure
- Salt air on this coast is harder on furniture and metal fittings than people expect. Anything going into storage locally gets wrapped accordingly.
- Parking
- Residents-only parking through much of Cascais and Estoril. The standing point is arranged before the day, not negotiated on it.
