Most of what we move to Coimbra is tied to the university, and that gives the work a shape the other destinations do not have.
Academic and research relocations run to a term or a contract start, not to a property completion. They often involve a rental found late, a period in storage in the middle, and a household arriving before its occupants have decided where they are living.
The city itself adds its own problem: the Alta, the upper town, is built up a hill and connected in places by flights of stone steps rather than roads.
Timing it around a start date
The overland route is the same as any mainland Portuguese delivery. What differs is the scheduling. Where a start date is fixed and the housing is not, we collect in the UK, hold the goods in storage, and deliver when you have an address — rather than pretending the two will line up by themselves.
That is a common arrangement and it is better set up at the quote than improvised halfway through.
Where the destination is a university-managed property, access is arranged with whoever administers the building. Terms and vacation periods affect when a delivery can realistically happen.

What delivery here is actually like
- The Alta
- The upper town has addresses reached by stone stairways with no vehicle access at all. These are hand-carry jobs and the crew is sized for them.
- Older apartment stock
- Narrow stairwells, small or absent lifts, and doorways cut before modern furniture existed. Measured at the survey.
- Storage in the middle
- The norm rather than the exception here. Goods are sealed, inventoried and held until an address exists.
- Term timing
- The city fills and empties with the academic year. Delivery slots around the start of term are tighter than at any other time.
