The Costa de Prata — the stretch of Atlantic coast north of Lisbon around Caldas da Rainha, Óbidos, Nazaré and Peniche — has become one of the places British households most often move to, largely because it offers what the Algarve did twenty years ago.
Access varies enormously across a small area. Caldas da Rainha is a straightforward working town. Óbidos is a walled medieval village where a vehicle cannot enter the walls at all. Nazaré is built on and under a cliff. Peniche is a working fishing port on a peninsula.
A single page cannot give one answer for all of it, so we survey each address properly.
Straightforward road freight, varied delivery
The overland route brings the load down through France and Spain and into Portugal, with the final approach off the A8. The road leg is among the easier Portuguese deliveries.
Inside the walls at Óbidos there is no vehicle access. Everything is carried in through a gate and along cobbles, which is a real physical job and is quoted as one rather than glossed over.
Nazaré splits between the Sítio on the cliff and the Praia below, connected by a funicular and a steep road. Which half you are moving to changes the job completely.
Around Caldas da Rainha and the newer coastal developments, access is generally modern and straightforward — driveways, adopted roads and normal loading.

- Óbidos inside the walls
- Pedestrian access only, cobbled and uneven, with a long carry from the nearest standing point. Crew sized accordingly.
- Nazaré
- Cliff-top Sítio or beach-level Praia — two different approaches, one of them steep and narrow.
- Atlantic exposure
- This coast takes weather straight off the ocean. Salt and damp are a factor for storage and for anything left boxed.
- New developments
- The newer estates around Caldas and Foz do Arelho have good modern access and are the simplest deliveries on this stretch.
