The Azores are nine islands spread across a wide stretch of the Atlantic, and the practical answer to "how do my things get there" depends entirely on which one you are going to.
Almost everything arrives through Ponta Delgada on São Miguel. If that is where you are moving, there is one sea leg. If you are going to Terceira, Pico, Faial, São Jorge, Graciosa, Flores or Corvo, there is a second — an inter-island transfer that adds another handling point and another schedule.
This is the most logistically involved destination we cover, and it is the one where planning ahead pays for itself most obviously.
Two sea legs, not one
The load runs overland from the UK through France and Spain to a mainland Portuguese port, then by sea to Ponta Delgada. For the smaller islands it is then transferred to an inter-island vessel.
Each transfer is a point where goods are handled, so the packing has to survive more than it would on a mainland move. Rigid, properly sealed cases for anything fragile; everything inventoried so that what went in can be checked against what came out at each stage.
Inter-island sailings are less frequent than the mainland service and are more exposed to weather. We do not quote a schedule for the final leg as though it were a courier delivery, because it is not one.
Groupage is almost always the right answer here. A full container to one of the smaller islands rarely makes sense for a household.

- Which island decides the job
- São Miguel and Terceira have the most developed handling; the smaller islands have less. We tell you which category yours falls into before you commit.
- Weather is a real variable
- Atlantic weather delays sailings, particularly in winter and particularly on the inter-island legs. That is not a caveat we bury in small print.
- Damp and salt
- Humid, changeable and maritime. Everything is wrapped for it, and we will advise against shipping certain items rather than take your money and let them arrive ruined.
- Rural access
- Outside Ponta Delgada and Angra do Heroísmo, many addresses are on narrow lanes with limited turning. Shuttle vehicles are standard.
