Madeira is not a road move. There is no driving to it, and that single fact changes everything about how a household is sent there.
Your goods travel overland to a mainland Portuguese port, then by sea to Funchal, then by road on an island where the gradients are genuinely severe. Each of those legs has its own handover, and each is a place where a badly packed load shows its weaknesses.
We plan a Madeira move backwards, from the front door in Funchal or Câmara de Lobos to the collection in the UK — because the last hundred metres are usually the hardest part.
How your things actually get there
The load leaves the UK by road and crosses to mainland Europe, then runs down through France and Spain to a Portuguese port. From there it goes by sea to Funchal. There is no road option and no direct road-freight alternative — anyone suggesting otherwise is describing a route that does not exist.
Because there is a sea leg, packing standards matter more than they do on a mainland move. Goods are wrapped for a marine environment: humidity, salt air and a container that will be handled several times. Export wrapping is not an upsell here, it is the minimum.
For smaller households, groupage is the norm — your goods share a container with other consignments heading the same way. It is the sensible way to move to an island unless you have a full house to send.
Sailings run to a schedule that is not ours, and that schedule occasionally moves for weather. We build that into the plan rather than promising a date the Atlantic gets a vote on.

- The gradients
- Funchal is built up the side of a valley. Many streets are too steep and too narrow for a large vehicle, and some properties are reached by steps. Long carries and small shuttle vehicles are normal, not exceptional.
- Levada-side properties
- Houses along the levadas and the older terraces often have pedestrian-only approaches. We establish the carrying distance before quoting, because it is the single biggest variable on this island.
- Apartments in Funchal
- Modern blocks have lifts, but many are small and some buildings restrict move-in hours. Booked in advance with the administração.
- Humidity
- Madeira is damp and mild year-round. Anything going into storage on the island — or staying in boxes for weeks — needs to be packed with that in mind. Upholstery and paper suffer first.
