Sintra is the most physically awkward mainland destination we deliver to, and it is worth being plain about that before you book anything.
The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site built into a wooded hillside. The roads that climb it are narrow, steep and full of hairpins. Many of the properties are listed quintas and palacetes with stone thresholds, original joinery and no rear access whatsoever.
None of this makes a Sintra move difficult. It makes it a move that has to be surveyed properly, with the right vehicle chosen months rather than days in advance.
Getting a vehicle up the hill
The overland leg is ordinary. The last three miles are not. Large vehicles cannot reach a significant proportion of Sintra addresses — the lanes above the town simply will not take them, and some routes have weight and width restrictions that are enforced.
The working answer is a staging point in the flatter ground below and a smaller shuttle vehicle for the climb. That is quoted openly as part of the job rather than added afterwards as a surprise.
For listed properties we protect stone thresholds, reveals and original joinery before anything moves, and we do not remove window frames or door heads to get an item through. Where something will not fit, we tell you at the survey while there is still time to decide what to do about it.

- The microclimate
- Sintra is markedly damper and cooler than Lisbon twenty miles away — that is the whole reason the aristocracy summered there. Books, textiles, upholstery and artwork all need packing for it, and long-term storage locally needs care.
- Listed quintas
- Restrictions on temporary alteration, stone that marks easily, and interiors that were not designed around modern furniture dimensions.
- Hairpins and gradients
- Several approaches are single-track with blind bends. Shuttling is standard here, not a fallback.
- Tourist traffic
- The town centre congests badly in season. Deliveries are scheduled early where the address is anywhere near the palaces.
